We are starting off 2017 with a workshop that dives into the details behind dying fiber with natural materials such as roots, flowers and nuts. Rebekka Seale of Camellia Fiber Company teaches how to use natural dye baths to create all sorts of beautiful dyed yarns! We'll take the finished yarn and turn it into a beautiful wall hanging though the expertise of Lisa Garcia of Sonadora Studios. Today, we chat creativity, artistic backgrounds and what makes for a really super studio relationship (these two are best friends).
This mid-month episode shares more on an upcoming pop-up shop where we revisit all of the workshops and materials kits from 2016 (plus a few more!). We release our full workshops and kits out of cycle twice yearly and we do our best to kit all of our wonderfully curated boxes of tools and materials once again for those that may not have had a chance to participate the first time around. In December we're working with Justin & Keary to create artisan wood cutting boards from scratch. Sarah K. Benning joins us to share more on her artistic background, her contemporary embroidery style and what makes her workshop in this upcoming month so special. We are so excited for October! In October, The Crafter's Box is partnering with Sarah to create a contemporary needlepoint piece as well as teach a thorough and detailed workshop on how to sew a variety of different stitches to complete a beautiful, signature Sarah K. Benning pattern. This month we are partnering with Brooklyn-based, French designer Amelie Mancini to send embroidery carryall cases in Amelie's traditional style. In September we are exploring wool felting with fiber artist Dani Ives. In this podcast episode we chat with Dani about her background and the beautiful technique that she refers to as 'painting with wool'. Dani walks us through the unique materials and tools found in our monthly box and we share about the small shop contributors for this month's kit. This month we have another special guest join us as Marie Spaulding of Living Felt offers an overview of how the felt batts are created for our workshop (and future felting!) and shares how her hobby turned into an Austin, Texas-based store and wool manufacturing company.
In August we are welcoming oil painting artist Emily Jeffords to The Crafter's Box to share a workshop on abstract & impressionistic landscape oil painting. This workshop shares an introduction to the tools and materials to begin painting or to hone in your painting skills (and practice them in a new way). We're hosting a pop-up shop to share past workshops and material's kits! From July 2-6 we'll release featured maker projects from the first seven months of The Crafter's Box. In this episode we share more on how this pop-up shop will work, what awesome kits it will include and the details on how to participate.
In July, we are working with Rachel Denbow to learn more about the age-old art of batik wax resist dying to create two beautiful wall hangings for the home. Rachel shares about her background in making and what draws her to life as a crafter. As the author of a book, editor of her own blog and contributing writer to others (such as A Beautiful Mess), Rachel has honed her artistic style by practicing a wide variety of different crafting mediums. Batik dying is a special and favorite! This month we are working closely again with husband-and-wife woodworking team Jeff and Cherie Kirschenman who have built the wooden hangers that suspend each beautiful piece of batik art as well.
